What Is Spravato®?

Spravato® nasal spray is a groundbreaking therapy that can provide rapid relief from severe depression using a ketamine derivative called esketamine.

In 2019, Spravato® was approved by the FDA to provide relief for those suffering from treatment-resistant depression (TRD).

Unlike traditional antidepressants, it acts rapidly by targeting specific brain receptors, providing relief for individuals who have not responded to conventional treatments. Spravato is administered under medical supervision and is often combined with oral antidepressants for enhanced effectiveness. Many insurance plans cover Spravato®, making it a more accessible option for those in need of advanced depression treatment.

Frequently Asked Question - FAQ's

What is Spravato® and how does it work?

Spravato® (esketamine) is an FDA-approved nasal spray derived from ketamine for the treatment of treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) with suicidal thoughts. It targets NMDA receptors in the brain, helping to rapidly relieve depressive symptoms when other medications have failed.

Who is eligible for Spravato® treatment?

Spravato is typically prescribed for adults with treatment-resistant depression or major depressive disorder with suicidal ideation. Patients must receive care at a certified Spravato treatment center under the supervision of a qualified healthcare provider.

How is Spravato® administered?

Spravato is a nasal spray self-administered in the clinic under direct medical supervision. After each dose, patients relax in a private room while trained staff monitor blood pressure, heart rate, and other vital signs for at least two hours to ensure safety.

How quickly does Spravato® work?

Many patients notice a reduction in depressive symptoms within hours or days of their first session—much faster than traditional antidepressants, which can take weeks to show results.

What are the potential side effects of Spravato®?

Possible side effects may include dizziness, dissociation, nausea, drowsiness, or temporary increases in blood pressure. Because of these effects, patients should not drive or operate machinery until the day after treatment.

How often will I need Spravato® treatments?

Treatment frequency varies by individual, but most people begin with two sessions per week for the first month, followed by a gradual taper based on progress and provider recommendations.
